TechBoston Course Descriptions title bar

TechBoston is viewed as a national model that offers effective methods of incorporating technology education in a school district. TechBoston administrators have presented at state and national technology conferences and have consulted with other school districts looking to form a similar technology education model.

Middle School Curriculum

Robotics

Robotics is an exciting way to teach students engineering, science and math concepts. Students are engaged by the hands-on nature of building and programming robots. In addition, students build their communication, cooperation and problem solving skills. TechBoston, in collaboration with Northeastern and Tufts Universities, will hold a professional development workshop for 30 teachers each summer. This workshop will feature a new robotics program designed to instruct students in engineering and IT concepts. For more information, please visit Robotics: Assistive Design for the Future.

Web Design

Web design teaches students HTML, Graphic Design, Information Management and Effective Communication. Web design can be used to compliment virtually any subject. For example, students researching the solar system in science can present their work as a web site that can be added to the classroom web site.

High School Curriculum

Intro to Web Development

Intro to web development covers the basic elements of web site design, including selection of materials, organization and navigational design, visual layout, and interactivity. Students will learn the HyperText Markup Language, as well as how to use HTML editors, and graphics software packages.

Advanced Web Programming

This course is for those students who have successfully completed Web 1: Intro to Web Development. The focus of the course is on creating dynamic and personalized web sites, utilizing scripting languages, databases, and style sheets.

Students discover the various aspects of web programming by taking apart a model site demonstrated to them at the outset of the course, and setting a goal of creating their own site. The task of the instructor is to guide the students in focusing on the essential building blocks of the site, and to facilitate the students' creation of their own web sites.

AP Computer Science - Java

This course provides a conceptual understanding of Object Oriented programming. The course also teaches students how to use the JAVA language's object oriented technologies to solve business problems. Topics also include the language fundamentals, the Java language API (application programming interface). Students learn how to create classes, objects and applications using the language. Students who complete this course will be prepared to take the AP Computer Science exam.

Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS)

Formerly called MOUS, the MOS program provides students competency-based training in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access applications. The course measures proficiency and identifies opportunities for skills enhancement through performance-based assessments. Students who successfully complete practice exams are eligible to take the industry recognized Microsoft Office Specialist Certification exams.

Oracle Internet Academy

The Oracle Internet Academy is designed to educate secondary students (ages 16 to 19) on the fundamentals of Internet and database technology and provide them with the necessary skills to pursue academic and professional opportunities.

Through strategic partnerships with secondary education institutions, the Academy educates our students using the latest technologies. We arm our children with not only the technical skills that they need to survive in today's ever advancing information age, but with the business and logic skills that they can carry with them for life.

The program is a one or two-year commitment between Oracle, educational institutions, teachers and students alike. Our Academies are comfortably centered in a traditional classroom format while simultaneously exposing students to the latest in e-learning technology.
