Closed Campus Competition

Most schools have a closed campus policy. This means that you may not leave the school premises during the school day. Your job is to create a robot that can leave school for you, pick up your lunch, and deliver it. Whether you want McDonald's, Burger King or Pizza Hut, your robot can be programmed to deliver.

In this event, teams will design and program a robot which is able to push three full cans of soda out of a 20 inch diameter ring formed out of black tape. The three soda cans will be taped together in a triangular shape. Teams must program their robots to push all three cans completely out of the ring and stop when the robot reaches the edge of the ring. Robots will be placed randomly in front of the cans to start and teams will have three chances to complete the challenge. Scoring will be based on successful completion of the challenge and speed.

Judging Procedure:

1. One team will compete at a time.
2. Three cans of soda will be taped together in a triangular shape and placed in the center of a black 20 inch diameter ring. Vehicles should be placed just inside the black ring, facing the direction of the cans to begin. (If vehicles are unable to start next to the edge of the ring and complete the challenge, then you may allow the vehicles to begin closer to the location of the cans).
3. Students should press the red “On” button on their vehicle and set their vehicle to the proper program.
4. On judge's mark, students will push the green “Run” button. However, do not begin timing until the vehicle touches the cans.
5. The vehicle must push all three cans completely out of the ring and, using a light sensor, stop automatically when it reaches the edge of the ring.
6. Record the time and other necessary information on the rubric for Trial 1.
7. Place the vehicle at a different location just inside the black line, facing the direction of the cans. Once again, the vehicle must push all three cans completely out of the ring and stop automatically when it reaches the edge of the ring. Record the time and other necessary information on the rubric for Trial 2.
8. Place the vehicle in one final location just inside the black line and complete Trial 3. Record the results on the rubric.
9. When finished with all three trials, complete the rubric and determine the top three finishers. Complete the results sheet and turn it in to the scorer’s table.

*note: Vehicle needs to be programmed to stop. It can stop right at the line, halfway over the line, or completely over the line (as where it stops is dependent on where the light sensor has been mounted on the vehicle). As long as it can stop on its own the team will be awarded the full amount of points.
